Chapter Nineteen

The inactivity was making her twitchy, and Hayley was teetering on the edge of volunteering for kitchen duty. She supposed she should be thankful they hadn’t assigned it to her, hadn’t assumed she should do it because she was the sole woman.

Maybe that meant more than she’d realized. She’d been pushing back, slowly, against Quinn’s order that she stick to the loft and the bathroom, and so far last night had been the only incident. She’d come back downstairs late, needing that bathroom. And had found Quinn and Vicente sitting at the small eating bar that separated the kitchen from the main room, talking. Intently. In Spanish.

He didn’t even look at her, but held up a hand to stop Vicente, then switched to English and said, “Make it quick.”

“It’ll take what it takes,” she snapped.

To her surprise, she thought she saw Vicente smile, albeit guardedly.

“Chica valiente,” he said, so softly she barely heard. Not that it mattered, her Spanish was limited to the ever useful “Habla Ingles?”

Quinn had said something in return, and while she had no idea what it meant, there was no mistaking his wry, almost irritated tone.

She could have looked it up, she thought now, if she had her smartphone—assuming she could get a signal here—or if she had access to that laptop of theirs, but that was clearly out of the question. She shuddered to think what her email inbox must look like by now.

Which made her wonder anew what was going on in the world she’d left behind. Her kindly neighbor Mrs. Peters would wonder where she was, at least, but enough to report her missing? Probably not. Hayley had spoken to her, musing idly, about taking a trip, getting away for a while. It seemed inviting, a good way to decide what she wanted to do with the rest of her life, although she’d made no concrete plans. Mrs. Peters might well assume she had done just that, even though it would be very odd for Hayley to do so without letting her know.

She’d quit her job to take care of her mother, and thanks to the nice inheritance that was now hers, she didn’t need to go back to work unless she wanted to—and frankly, she hadn’t missed her work in the county clerk’s office all that much anyway. But now there was no one to miss her when she didn’t show up at an office or something.

Her best friend, Amy, would be getting worried, she knew. They spoke or emailed every couple of days, and had plans to get together at the end of the month when Amy had vacation coming from her job as a paralegal down in L.A. She’d be more likely to make a fuss, Hayley thought. And Amy was a force to be reckoned with, when she got motivated. She—

“Hayley?”

She snapped out of her reverie with a start as Liam said her name. She realized he’d been standing there for a moment, and was now looking at her curiously.
